The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise, and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multidisciplinary hub purposed to enable the broader cancer research community. As part of the CRTP, the Cancer Data Science Initiatives (CDSI) group establishes and extends computational and data science initiatives and strategic collaborations to address key cancer challenges, accelerate cancer research, and advance predictive oncology. CDSI has a leadership role in several collaborations, including the partnership between the National Cancer Institute and the Department of Energy (DOE) to simultaneously accelerate advances in precision oncology and scientific computing. These collaborations are growing and have developed innovative artificial intelligence (AI) resources, technologies, and collaborative research opportunities that are shaping the future of predictive oncology, drug discovery, and clinical applications for cancer.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The Communications Manager is a new position created to expand engagement with the broader scientific research community. The primary focus of the position is to implement educational initiatives to foster increased adoption of the new AI resources and other areas that will help cancer researchers advance science. Responsibilities include:
- Facilitate and support the development of strategies for collaborative cancer data science education initiatives that emphasize community engagement and alignment to the projects' strategic goals.
- Initiate, coordinate and manage virtual, in-person, or hybrid educational events (such as hands-on workshops, webinars, and seminars) to foster and expand community engagement for collaborative NCI programs. Responsibilities include:
- Close coordination with the other CDSI managers, NCI project teams, and stakeholders
- Logistics planning and support, including coordination of audiovisual support, as needed
- Promotion of educational events by writing compelling event announcements and emails
- Creation, maintenance, and publicity of a calendar of educational events
- Facilitation and management of robust community feedback activities for educational programs, including obtaining, tracking, and analyzing feedback for all events and supporting broad outreach.
- Prepare and coordinate content and production of educational collateral materials such as instructional videos, FAQ, user guides, and virtual toolkits.
- Coordinate and write website updates to ensure timely posting of event recordings, presentations, and other workshop materials.
- Serve as the liaison with participants and stakeholders for the education initiatives.
- Develop relationships with NCI and interdisciplinary stakeholders in the broader research community to identify needs and gaps for education about the projects' new AI and technology resources-and develop strategies to overcome the challenges.
- Work with federal and CDSI team leads and managers, participate in meetings with stakeholders, and make recommendations for continuous improvement of community engagement and educational resources.
- Attend occasional stakeholder, scientific, or industry events, as appropriate.
- Work with the FNL Scientific Publications, Graphics, and Media group, other CDSI managers, and relevant federal stakeholders to ensure accessibility (Section 508) and other requirements are met.
- Work with the CRTP Administrative Director/Office as required.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of six (6) years of related experience.
- Demonstrated strategic thinking and outstanding writing skills.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, client relations, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and solve complex problems and to work collaboratively across multiple organizational levels and organizations.
- Creative, adaptable, and motivated to make an impact
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- Four (4) years of lead/supervisor experience
- Knowledge, experience or proficiency in the following areas:
- Working in a learning environment and with senior-level executives
- Leading workforce development initiatives
- Developing community engagement strategies across broad and diverse audiences
- Interest in scientific discovery and accelerating cancer research
